In truth, we started writing it backstage at An Iliad. Lisa would come back to give me notes about a performance and then she’d shift gears and say, “Can we talk about Good Book stuff?”.

Our October workshop was incredible. We were abled assisted by Drew Dir - a performer and student at U of C. Steve Albert, the president of the board of Court Theatre and along with Charlie Newell, one of our commissioners - made sure that we had everything. We shared a 2 bedroom apartment. We’d get shuttled to our little atelier on campus, then shuttled to a meeting with someone at the Divinity School or to a class and then shuttled back to our apartment.

A Commission

We started work on The Good Book in the fall of 2012 at U of C. After much discussion and some negotiations on the part of our agents, we came to a very sensible agreement. Write a play by a certain date and if all parties are satisfied, it’ll be performed. Gulp.
